This is probably one of the most poignant dreams I ever had, from 1990. In it, I was a little kid dragged by parents to a boring grownup party at someone's house where there were no kids to play with. I sat in a sofa in the living room, leafing through art coffee table books (which were indeed on the coffee table) because because they had pictures in them. A teenage girl walked into the living room and saw me. She told me she has something amazing to show upstairs, and asked if I would like to see it.. Eager for a distraction, I said yes and jumped off the sofa. I followed her upstairs.
She led me to what looked like a spare bedroom, sparsely furnished. She opened a door to what turned out to be a small and empty closet, just a metal bar for hanging clothes.
"Let's sit in here," she said, as we entered the closet. We both sat down on the closet floor, our backs to the closet's back wall.
I asked, "Are we playing a game?"
"Shh, please close your eyes."
She pulled the closet door shut, making the closet dark except for a strip of light at the bottom of the door. I closed my eyes, wondering what will happen next. I felt the teenage girl's body next to me shifting as if she was reaching for something in the closet.
After a minute, she said, "Now, you can open our eyes, and look behind us."
I opened my eyes, and saw the closet was now filled with silver-white light, like the kind that comes through a window on a snowy day, even though the closet door was still closed. I looked over my shoulder, and my jaw dropped. The closet's back wall was completely gone, revealing a view of the outdoors. But even though it was early evening with the sky darkening, it was daylight, though cloudy, in that world. I could feel drafts coming from it, so it was an opening, not a big picture. And even though we were on the second floor, the world was level with the closet's floor -- in fact, a dirt path led from the back edge of the closet floor into the world, gently winding around cposes of trees full of pink and white flowers.
The girl bealmed at my reaction, andsaid,"Let's go for a walk."
Together, we stepped out of the dark closet, onto the dirt path. As we made our way around the trees, it started snowing even though it wasn't cold.
I exclaimed, "It's snowing!"
The girl laughed, "No, it's not snowing. Look closer -- the trees are shedding their flower petals."
She was right. The snow wasn't snowflakes, just pink and white petals drifting toward the ground. The path gradually got covered in flowers, like a pink and white splotched rug. Petals also fell on our heads and shoulders. We laughed as we continued down the path. It was like being in a magical fairy world.
At this point, the dream segued to a time several years later. Again, my folks and I were visiting the same house for some grownup gathering. Once I realized this was the house with the magic closet, I made my way upstairs to see if the closet was there. I found the room which was still a sparse guest bedroom, and made my way to the closet. The closet had more things than the last time, such as a few garment bags hanging from the rod. But there was enough space on the closet floor for me to sit down. I closed my eyes and pulled the closet door shut. Unsure what I should do next, I waited for a moment. Then I opened my eyes and looked around, at the back wall. I saw nothing, just the back wall, lit dimly lit by light streaming under the closet door. I pushed at the back wall, but it was solid and didn't move. I tried to remember what that girl did. But I had no idea, as my eyes were also closed at that time. She had sat on the floor like me, facing the closet door. She hadn't spoken anything like magic words. I examined the back wall for anything like a knob or latch. I knocked on the wall, but it sounded just like a standard drywall. . I looked for cracks or openings; still nothing. Then I got overwhelmed by disappointment. I sat down on the floor and cried. The magic was gone.
